What happens during scaling & polishing?
Scaling – cleaning below and around the gums
- Ultrasonic tips gently break and wash away tartar and plaque deposits.
- Special attention is given to areas between teeth and along the gumline.
- This helps reduce bleeding, swelling and early signs of gum disease.
- We guide you on brushing and interdental cleaning for home care.
Polishing – smooth, stain-free tooth surfaces
- Surface stains from tea, coffee or smoking are polished away.
- Teeth feel smoother, cleaner and look naturally brighter.
- Polishing after scaling also makes it harder for plaque to stick again.
- For deeper colour change, separate whitening treatment may be suggested.
Scaling & polishing is especially helpful if
- Your gums bleed while brushing or flossing.
- You notice bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth even after brushing.
- You can see yellow-brown deposits near the gumline.
- Your teeth feel rough when you run your tongue over them.
- It has been more than 6–12 months since your last professional cleaning.
Frequently asked questions about cleaning
Does scaling make teeth loose or weak?
No. Scaling removes tartar that is already weakening the support of the teeth. Sometimes, teeth feel
a little “freer” after cleaning because swollen gums settle down – but the procedure itself does not
loosen healthy teeth.
Will my enamel get thinner with repeated scaling?
Professional scaling targets tartar and plaque, not healthy enamel. When done with proper instruments
and technique, enamel is not shaved away, and routine cleanings are considered safe.
Is the procedure painful?
Most people feel only mild sensitivity or vibration during ultrasonic scaling. For very sensitive
areas or inflamed gums, we can work slowly, use desensitising agents or, if needed, numbing gel or
local anaesthesia to keep you comfortable.
How often should I get scaling & polishing done?
For most patients, once in 6–12 months is ideal. If you have gum problems, diabetes, smoking habits
or more tartar build-up, your dentist may advise more frequent cleanings.
